Peperomia Plant Basics
I recently got my first Peperomia plant and fell in love! This fairly easy to grow plant has ornamental leaves that add some contrast to most houseplants.
They like humid area which make them a great addition to any bathroom. However, they’re very adaptable and can grow in just about any room in your home.
These plants like medium to bright light and don’t like to be overwatered. It’s non-toxic for cats and dogs.
Plants in this family make great houseplants for newbies because they’re easy to grow and clean the air.
Peperomia Plant History
Peperomia plants are in the peppercorn family, Piperaceae, which belong to the flowering plants known as the Magnoliids. While the Peperomia plants we’re talking about in this post won’t actually flower, the leaves of these plants are so beautiful you won’t even realize it!
They originate from Southeast Asia and India. The Piperaceae family has a variety of types of plants which produce different peppercorns, the most common being the black peppercorn.
Funny enough, one type of pepper from a Peperaceae plant is used to make Kava kava which is used to make a ceremonial drink on the island of Fiji which my husband and I got to taste while on our honeymoon in Fiji!
Peperomia Plant Care Tips + Tricks
Water
A Peperomia plant needs to be watered typically every 1-2 weeks. Allow the soil to dry out before watering again. Put a finger into the soil to ensure it has dried out before watering.
Like most plants, they need more water during warmer months and less water in cooler months. Be careful to not overwater them as they won’t thrive that way.
If your Peperomia gets quite a bit of light you will likely need to increase your watering frequency.
These plants do best in well draining soils potted in a container with a drainage hole. They also do best in smaller containers because they don’t have very many roots.
Light
Peperomia plants do best in medium to bright, indirect light. They can even do ok with artificial light and can tolerate low light. Basically they’re pretty adaptable. 😉
One tell tale sign of not enough light is dropping leaves and losing color. Keep them out of dark corners of a room.
Also be sure to not give them too much direct sunlight as that can be harmful and burn the leaves.
Soil
It’s recommended that you use a mixture of 50% peat moss and 50% perlite for your Peperomia plants.
Temperature and Humidity
Goldfish plants do better in warmer, humid environments and don’t like cold drafts.. The do best in rooms that are 65 to 85 degree Fahrenheit. Don’t let it get below 60 degrees.
Peperomia Plant Propagation
I have yet to try to propagate mine, and will update this post once I do. However it is said that you can propagate a peperomia from any part of the plant except the roots!
I’m going to share one way (I’d say the easiest way to propagate a peperomia plant) with you. You can propagate a Peperomia plant the same way you do a pothos. Cut off a stalk of the plant (not just the leaf) and put it in water. I personally like to do the bulk of propagating in water so I know that it actually takes root before planting it!
After a few weeks you’ll begin to see roots form. When that happens you can put it in a pot (remember to use a smaller pot and well draining soil). Mist it and keep it in a humid spot while it’s a baby to encourage growth!
