Depression is an awful thing. I have a few friends who struggle with it, and I know how hard it is for them. As their friend, I wish I knew what to say when they’re going through a rough time, but often times I come up with nothing and can only offer a hug and a prayer.
Chances are, you know someone who struggles with depression, too.
According to NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health), major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. In fact, an estimated 16 million adults and 2.2 million adolescents had at least one depressive episode in 2012. The number of patients diagnosed with depression increases by approximately 20% per year. An estimated 350 million people around the world currently suffer from some form of depression.
It seems like nobody talks about it, despite being something that so many people are affected by. That’s why I love discovering companies like Link of Hearts, whose mission is to inspire and connect with someone directly… to touch one’s heart and encourage someone to get through one more day… and be a voice to help fight the stigma of mental illness.
Every piece they design comes with an inspirational word/phrase. They believe one simple word on a piece of jewelry or any piece of item is a positive, powerful daily reminder of hope. That is the purpose. That is the mission.
For every product you purchase, they give a bracelet with an inspirational message to someone battling depression or anyone in need of inspiration as a symbol of hope.
I recently got their “bar of goodness” necklace and picked 4 words to be included on it. My words are grace, courage, patience, and love.
Grace because I’m learning to have grace with myself.
Grace to not get down on myself when I make mistakes, say the wrong thing, or do something dumb.
Courage because I need a lot of it these days!
Courage to be a good mom (and not to mention go through labor…ha!), courage to continue running my shop through ups and downs of business and motherhood, and courage to try new things.
Patience because I could always use patience!
Patience for my business because I always want P+S to be bigger and better than it currently is. Patience with my husband because (surprise!) he’s not perfect. Patience with my dog because, well, she’s a dog. And I can guarantee you I’ll need patience with a newborn! 😉
And last love.
Because I could always always always love more and love better.
