A Day in the Life of A Blogger (+Mom!)

I am always so interested in hearing about “a day in the life” of other people. Today I wanted to share mine! A day in the life of a blogger!

I get asked quite a bit about what my schedule looks like and how I get work done with 2 little kids. There’s no exact science to this because you can never predict what life will look like with kids but here is a sample!

We actually have a nanny who comes a couple days a week to help out and give me time to actually work so I’m sharing 2 different days with you.

A Day in the Life of A Blogger

A Day in the Life of Blogger/Mom

Monday (day with the kids)

6:00 – 6:30am Wake up, feed the dog + workout

I’ve been doing quick 20 minute runs on our Peloton tread 2-3 days a week and strength workouts another 2.

6:30 – 7:00am Make coffee, eat breakfast, wash face

If I’m planning on giving the kids a bath I won’t shower before they’re up since I am able to shower while they’re in the bath (our shower and bath are right next to one another which makes it super convenient!).

7:00 – 800am Work

Since Penelope has been waking up between this time I don’t start any big projects. I hate getting interrupted part way through. Instead I reply to emails, figure out what deadlines are coming up, plan out content or plan out social media posts.

8:00 – 9:00am Breakfast for the kids

Honestly this can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much the kids are eating or chatting!

9:00 – 9:20am Get kids ready for the bath

Roy decided to be a big stinker and not want to get in the bathtub. This should take 2 minutes, today it took 20. This is why it’s hard to schedule things ha!

9:20 – 10:20am Kids bath + I shower

The kids LOVE the bath and could be in there for hours (once I finally get Roy in there!). I take a quick shower and do my hair/makeup/get dressed. Then I play with them a bit before washing them up and getting them out.

If I’ve already showered I’ll bring my laptop into the bathroom and work! They typically play really well together in the bath. Because of that, I try to step back and let them just play together.

10:20 – 10:30am, Get kids dressed

10:30 – 11:15am P nap

This is not normal but she seemed so tired so I laid her down for a short nap!

Toddler jumping on the bed

10:30 – 11:15am Roy and I played

I actually needed to get some photos with Roy for an upcoming project and he LOVES helping me with photos. We played and took photos!

I always love it when the kids can be involved in my work so it’s not taking time away from them. And it’s fun when they’re able to do something enjoyable with me!

11:15 – 12pm Lunch time

12:00 – 12:30pm Go to the park

We live near a church that doubles as a school so we walk over there a lot in the summer! It’s more for older kids though so we never spend too much time there since the equipment is a little big for them.

It’s still nice to get out of the house and get a change of scenery!

12:30 – 1:15pm Play outside at home

The kids typically always sleep better when they’ve been able to run around outside so this is a must!

1:15 – 1:30 Get ready for naps, read books

1:30 – 3:15 Kids sleep and I work

Again, Penelope has been weird with her sleeping so I always bank on her waking up after 1 hour. She surprised me though and stayed asleep! I was able to edit a ton of photos and get a few posts written and sent out to clients for review.

I often times start this time by picking up the house, washing any dishes and going through the mail. It’s hard for me to concentrate in a messy environment!

3:15pm P up, read books

3:30pm Roy up

3:30 – 4pm Snack time (outside!)

This may seem late for snacks but we try to wait for Rishi to get home from work so we can eat as a family. If we don’t have a snack there’s no chance Penelope will last!

4 – 6pm Play outside

I had actually pre-made dinner for tonight so all I had to do was put it in the oven! I did about 10 minutes of work to the brussels sprouts, otherwise it was ready to go.

This is why I LOVE warm weather! The kids love playing outside and can entertain themselves with sticks, pinecones and sidewalk chalk. We spent a good chunk of time blowing bubbles and attempting to teach Chloe how to fetch. It’s magical to be able to play outside ha!

6 – 6:45pm Rishi home, eat dinner

We like to do dinner as a family but it doesn’t always happen depending on Rishi’s work schedule. Today he came home early so we were able to eat together!

6:45 – 7:30pm Play time as a family

This is when the kid’s see Rishi so it’s important for us to just spend the time hanging out and playing.

7:30 – 8:00 Get kids ready for bed.

8 – 9:45pm Clean up from dinner and I work.

I don’t always work in the evenings but if I have deadlines or things I need done I do. Being pregnant makes it a little harder to work super late or start bigger projects just because I don’t have the mental and physical energy to do it!

9:45 Get ready for bed.

10pm Good night!

A Day in the Life of Blogger/Mom

Wednesday (day with nanny)

6:15 – 6:45am Wake up, take care of Chloe, eat breakfast, drink coffee

I normally workout the days our nanny comes but we had a late night with a church meeting the night before so this pregnant mama needed some sleep!

Rishi was leaving on a work trip so we had to chat through logistics while he was getting ready.

6:45 – 8:30am Work

This is one of the rare days that both the kids slept in so I was able to do both housework and blog work!

On days I know help is coming, I try to do things I can’t do on my laptop like editing photos or videos or cleaning up around the house.

8:30 – 9:00am Nanny arrives + kids wake up

Despite the fact that our kids are obsessed with our sweet nanny, I still am not a fan of not being there when they wake up if possible. Sometimes I’ll just get some work done in my office or spend a bit of extra time checking with our nanny on her life! I find it important to spend some time with our sitters before we leave so they feel welcome and valued and our kids aren’t just immediately handed off to a new person.

Also since I don’t have coworkers she’s great to run ideas past or get my extrovert-ness taken care of before I hole up by myself for the day! 🙂

A Day in the Life of Blogger/Mom

9:00 – 1:30pm Work time

I always do my work at a coffeeshop rather than at home so I leave the house while our nanny is there. I literally walk one block to my local coffeeshop where I know nobody will bother me and I can get a solid amount of uninterrupted work time done!

I’ve tried going to “trendy” coffeeshops but I always end up seeing people I know and doing more chit-chatting than working so I’ve found it’s best for me to walk a block, support my local coffeeshop and get a ton of work done! 🙂

During this time I do a lot of writing – blog posts, emails, etc. – planning and strategy work. I leave things that are more “mindless” tasks like creating pins for Pinterest, scheduling Facebook posts or checking my analytics for evening time when I have less brain power.

1:30 – 4:00

More work time – surprisingly! Apparently our kids were worn out so they slept longer than normal! This allowed me to get a bit more work done! I always come home right after the kids go down for a nap which allows me to transition home without walking into mad chaos and also wrapping up anything I needed to.

Often times I use this time for shooting or editing photos since I do that on my desktop computer. I usually start a list of things I need shot while I’m writing posts. This helps me be efficient when I get home.

A Day in the Life of Blogger/Mom

4:00 – 6:00pm Outside Play

If we can be outside we’re pretty much always outside! Ha!

Rishi was heading out for a work trip that night so he came home early (5pm) and played with the kids while I got dinner ready.

6:00 – 6:30pm Dinner

6:30 – 7:30pm Run Outside

The kids were literally being crazy and seemed SO full of energy after dinner. Therefore, I got everyone’s tennis shoes on and we ran around the block with Chloe.

Roy LOVES to run and Penelope is finally learning how to do it so they have a blast running up and down the block together.

7:30 – 8:00pm Get ready for bed + bedtime

The run clearly wore them out because both kids were out by 8:05!

8:00 – 10:30pm Clean up + work

Typically when Rishi is gone, I’ll put on a show that only I like and get some of the mindless tasks done like updating old blog posts. Sometimes I get a little bit carried away and my bedtime gets away from me ha!

That night I was regretting that decision because we had a super bad thunderstorm so I was up from 4-5am with a scared little 2 year old in my bed! That 6am alarm was a bit brutal the next morning!

These are 2 actual days from this week. As you can see, some days I’m able to get a ton done while others are more heavy on the kids!

I used to get so stressed out when I wasn’t able to get a lot of work done. Now I just go with the flow and do the best I can.

I’ve also learned to make sure I don’t wait till right before a deadline to finish something since it can be hard to predict how much work time I’ll get in any given day with the kids.

So there you have it! A day (or two) in the life of me. How much does this differ from yours?
